The design combines traditional Nepali architecture with modern influences. The palace is infamous for the Royal Massacre on June 1, 2001, when King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya, and several royal family members were killed under mysterious circumstances. Crown Prince Dipendra, who was held responsible, also died in the event, though details remain a topic of speculation and controversy. After the abolition of the monarchy, the palace was converted into the Narayanhiti Palace Museum and opened to the public in February 2009.
