Rara lake trekking is one of the most demanded trekking trails in Nepal. Rara Lake is one of the largest lakes of Nepal, situated in Mugu district in the far western region, near Gam Ghadi (district-headquarter of Mugu) and Talca airstrip. Rara is a unique spot in Nepal. The lake is situated in the Rara National Park. It is situated in the remote area. The surface of Rara Lake is around 8 sq km. The length of the lake is 5 km and it is 2 km wide, the altitude around 3060 m. maximum depth is 167 m. This trek goes through the remote wilderness of western Nepal and offers a superb experience of nature and a visit to Rara Lake.
One of the features of this trekking is that you will have a chance to explore the beautiful high altitude lake—Rara, which is surrounded by alpine meadows and forests of pine, juniper, and spruce, whilst in the background, you can view the magnificent snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas.

Flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (150m/492ft) 1 hour: After breakfast check-out from Hotel then Alliance Adventure staff takes you to Kathmandu Domestic airport toward your journey to Nepalgunj which is very close to the border of Nepal-India and a gateway to Simikot, Humla. Flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla (2,540m/8,331ft) 20 minutes then Trek to Chere Chaur (3,055m/10,020ft): After early breakfast check into the Nepalgunj airport and then flight to Jumla, a gateway for trekkers who really want to know remote places of Nepal. Trek from Chere Chaur to Chala Chaur (2,980m/9,774ft): Today the trek leads to Jaljala Pass (3,580m/11,742ft) and from the pass you will see very beautiful sceneries. Trek from Chala Chaur to Sinja Valley (2,490m/8,167ft): After breakfast the trail following quite of villages and the Jaljala Khola. Today is the most important history of Nepal in Sinja Valley. The valley is a very old capital city of Khasa Kingdom that was ruled on the 12th to the 14th century. Trek from Sinja Valley to Ghorosingha (3,050m/10,004ft): Today the trail gradually climbs up following the side of Hima river then climb on steepy continues to Laha village, after that move toward to Ghorosingha pass by Ghat Khola. Overnight at Camp – B.L.D
Trek from Ghorosigha to Rara Lake (3,010m/9,872ft): After breakfast, the trek leads to Chuchhemara Danda where you can really watch amazing Himalayan Panorama views and peaceful Rara lake and green vegetation surrounding the Rara National Park. The Rara lake passes through the Khatyar Khola, some of villages and house of Rara National Park headquarter. Overnight at Camp – B.L.D
Rest and Explore the Rara Lake: After breakfast explores the Rara Lake which is the largest lake and blue water lake in Nepal. The Chuchemara Peak, southern to the side of Rara Lake and Ruma Kand, Malika Kand peaks surround the northern side. Overnight at Camp – B.L.D
Trek from Rara Lake to Pina Village (2,440m/8,003ft): Today the trail through Gamgadhi which one is very remote, headquarter of Mugu District in Nepal and then toward to Pina village. Most of the trail will go down with relatively sceneries. Overnight at Camp – B.L.D
Trek from Pina Village to Bumra (2,850m/9,348ft): After breakfast, walk slides down and toward to Ghurchi Lagna Pass (3,480m/11,414ft). After the Pass following down through some of the villages and to Bumra Village known by Nauri Ghat. After reaching to Camp guide will explore the surroundings of the villages. Trek from Bumra to Jumla (2,540m/8,331ft): Today is last day of your trekking in the western side of Nepal. The trail through by suspension bridges over the Hima river and after that you will reach Hot Spring – Natural hot water, give you time for enjoying with Hot Spring that is good for the painful body, then toward to Danphe Lagna Pass (3,691m/12,107ft). After the Pass, you will go to Chere Chaur which is the first day of our trekking overnight stay place as after that same way of the first day walking trail back to Jumla. Overnight at Lodge – B.L.D
Flight from Jumla to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu Domestic Airport: After Early breakfast, flight to Nepalgunj airport from Jumla. After reaching Nepalgunj airport and then fly back to Kathmandu airport. As soon as you arrived in Kathmandu airport, Alliance Adventure staff will come to pick-up, transfer to Hotel, rest and freshen of the hot shower. After this pleasant Adventure we will offer you Nepali typical culture dinner and Alliance Adventure hand over your Trekking Permit, TIMS Card and Certificate for the Nepal Adventure memory of your life.

Rara Lake is located in the far-western region of Nepal, within Rara National Park in the Mugu district. It is the largest lake in Nepal, offering stunning views and tranquil surroundings.
The best time for the Rara Lake Trek is during the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May). These seasons provide clear skies, mild temperatures, and optimal trekking conditions.
The Rara Lake Trek is considered moderate in difficulty. It involves several days of trekking in rugged terrain, with gradual ascents and descents. Some previous trekking experience is recommended.
Rara Lake sits at an altitude of approximately 2,990 meters. The trek reaches altitudes of up to 3,600 meters, so altitude sickness is generally not a concern, but acclimatization is still recommended.
You need a Rara National Park entry permit and a TIMS (Trekking Information Management System) card. These permits are required to access the trekking route and the protected park areas.
Accommodation during the trek mainly consists of basic guesthouses and lodges. In some areas, camping might be necessary, but most places offer basic amenities such as beds and food.
The trek typically takes about 8 to 12 days, depending on your route, pace, and the number of rest days you take. The trek involves both trekking days and rest days to explore the surroundings.
The Rara Lake Trek offers a variety of stunning landscapes, from lush forests to alpine meadows. You’ll also experience breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and observe a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including Himalayan black bears, musk deer, and various bird species.
While the Rara Lake Trek is considered moderate, it can be challenging for beginners due to the remote location and rugged terrain. Previous trekking experience and a good level of fitness will make the trek more enjoyable.
Essential items for the Rara Lake Trek include a warm sleeping bag, windproof and waterproof jackets, sturdy trekking shoes, trekking poles, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), a camera, a first aid kit, and water purification tablets. Don’t forget your personal toiletries and a backpack for day hikes.
